Tre Arrow will stay in prison two years

The Northwest's eco-activist will remain in prison until 2010. He also has financial problems.

After seven years when he burned cement trucks in Portland and logging trucks in Eagle Creek, Arrow also known as Michael Scarpitti was sentenced Tuesday sunalnuto 78 months in prison.

Arrow gained notoriety in 2000, when he climbed the outside of the U.S. Courthouse in Portland to protest destruction of the environment. He stayed on an upper window ledge for a few days, surrounded by posters, supporters and the media.

After a year, he was burning trucks. Right after that, FBI agents identified him and three others as the prime suspects. Those three pled guilty in 2003 and served 41-month prison terms.

Arrow fled to Canada, where he was caught again shoplifting in 2004. He came to U.S. after he was delayed because he fought extradition, but he finally lost that fight and landed back in Portland, and in federal custody, about seven months ago.

The time in Canada, along with the seven months in Portland, counts as time served. So his 78-month sentenced is now reduced for time served. Plus, he will qualify for "good time", meaning if he doesn't cause serious trouble in prison, he can get another 50 days or so per year shaved off his sentence. In conclusion he will be 36 years old when he will get out of prison.

He will be released in 2008, but it may not entirely end his troubles. He will be on probation for three years, during this time he is supposed to start paying restitution of more than $100,000 to the Ross Island Sand and Gravel Company and the Schoppert Logging Company.
